The Morgan Glen Viaduct

The viaduct was constructed in the period 1898 to 1904by Arroll Brothers (Engineers) and Adam Hall Boyle (Contractor), both of Glasgow, for the Caledonian Railway Company for the Larkhall to Stonehouse branch line.

The branch line, Morgan Glen viaduct and the nearby Stonehouse viaduct (now demolished), were opened in ceremony at Larkhall Central Station in May 1905. This was performed by Henry Montgomery McNeil-Hamilton of Raploch and Broomhill, who owned the land at Morgan Glen.

The line was closed as a result of the Beeching cuts, with the last passenger using the line in 1964.

The viaduct is a B Listed structure and said to be one of the highest railway bridges in Scotland.

It is 236m long, covering six spans, and approximately 45m high over the river.

It is currently in a poor state of repair and continuing to deteriorate. It faces and uncertain future.
